About Disciples Church Leatherhead

Disciples Church Leatherhead

Disciple – a follower of Jesus
Church – a community of Christians

Jesus is the builder of the church, not just this church in Leatherhead, but The Church across the world. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). So when presenting our story we must first introduce The Writer.

Jesus took the initiative and stepped into our story clothing himself with humanity (Philippians 2:7). He came on a rescue mission, to save us from our own destruction and brokenness. He spoke in ways that nobody had ever heard before. People exclaimed that “No one ever spoke like this man!” (John 7:46). He spoke of life and purpose unshackled by the slavery of our self-destructive ways. He spoke of the love of a Father who loved us enough to send his Son to rescue us.

The Church Bought at a Price

This rescue would mean he would have to take on the pain and rebellion of this world and suffer the consequences of our rebellion himself in order to write us into his script of redemption. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Jesus took on sin and death on the cross. The wrath that was due to us for our rebellion was poured out on Jesus’ willing sacrifice. (Galatians 3:13) On the third day Jesus rose again conquering the great enemy of death.

Our story is found in His-story. Jesus send out his disciples into the world to proclaim what he has done for humanity and to demonstrate this new life of hope to a world without hope. We live out this story of redemption as the church and offer to all people the opportunity to become part of God’s story.

Disciples Church – Calvary Chapel Leatherhead

Disciples Church (DC) is part of the Calvary Chapel family of churches. DC started in 2007, as a gathering of a dozen people in Leatherhead. Matt Kottman and his family were sent out by Calvary Chapel Twickenham to start Disciples Church (then known as Calvary Chapel Leatherhead). In 2012 we changed the name of the church to reflect our passion – to follow Jesus as disciples and to live out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), which calls us to be disciples and to make disciples.

A disciple grows to be more like his Master. Thus the Bible, is studied and preached in our gatherings. The Word of God reveals the God of the Word, and it is him we desire to behold. Knowing Jesus more truly means we follow Jesus more fully. We are disciples. However, the role of the disciple is to point others to the one they are following. It’s been said that a Christian is one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread. As followers of Jesus, we aim to point other people toward the one we follow that they too may become followers.
