This is What it Means to be a Christian in Syria

We had the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church last Sunday.  Christians are suffering all over the world for their faith. In our service we showed the video below which was put together by Voice of the Martyrs and Release International. Pray for our brothers and sisters who are being killed for their faith. What can we do? We can pray for our brothers. Commit to praying for those who are being persecuted for their faith. Many organisations…

Resolving To Read

We are ramping up to a New Year. This usually means New Years resolutions. In the past, I have been down on making resolutions. Maybe its because they have tended to centre around eating less chocolate. Maybe its because it seemed that it was about our efforts to change ourselves. The fact of the matter is, change is what we are created for. Sin works a de-creation in our lives making us less and less like the God we were created to image…

Our New Name

Why are we changing the name of the church? This short post is to explain why we have decided to rename Calvary Chapel Leatherhead to Disciples Church. Before I explain why we have changed the name, I would like to make it clear that we are still part of the Calvary Chapel network of churches. Our name change is in no way to distance us from Calvary, but rather to link us more to the community, in which we minister.…

Prayer in the Church

This past Sunday we were studying 1 Timothy 2:1-7 looking at a praying church as critical for the mission of God. In our study we did a brief overview of the book of Acts on the issue of prayer. Acts chronicles the birth and early history of the church of Jesus Christ. If we were to ask whether prayer was an important aspect of the early church, we should be able to look at the church’s practice in Acts to see this. Here…

Why Should Someone Commit to a Church?

I often hear Christians say that they are part of the Church but not part of the church. In other words, they say they love Jesus and are having church wherever they go with other Christians. But the idea of committing to a local church is asking a bit much of them. The local church is God’s idea. Joshua Harris in the 2 minute video explains briefly why the church is important. He also wrote an excellent book called Stop Dating…

Interview on Singleness

Mission in the Workplace

We, as Christians, are called to live out the truth of the Gospel of Jesus. That means using all areas of our lives as opportunities for God’s mission to the world to show the glory of Jesus.

Unwavering

It’s the middle of the night here in London. I’ve been back in the UK about 33 hours which means jetlag is in full swing. As I lay wide awake in bed my mind was meditating on unwavering faith, specifically the faith that Abraham had in Romans 4. God had made a promise to Abraham, a promise that seemed impossible to keep. In fact in Romans 4:18, we read that Abraham hoped against hope. In other words, he had hope in a…

Hope

This is a word that gets a lot of play. When we use the word hope, we usually mean that we should cross our fingers and wish for the best. Hope then becomes nothing more than positive thinking. But the Bible gives us a different perspective on the word hope. Hope carries the idea of an expectation of good. Hope is coupled with certainty, that is to say, certainty regarding the future. The question then is not one of IF, but of…
